Sterling, Massachusetts was settled in 1720.  Apple orchards thrived in the fertile soil and apple cider making became an important industry, earning the town the nickname "Appletown".
Perhaps the town's most memorable resident was Mary Sawyer, who, in 1814 was followed to school by one little white lamb.  A visiting student from Harvard Divinity School composed a poem about her.  A statue in tribute sits in the town common, along with other monuments and two stone chairs believed to be Indian artifacts.
